Colonial Home Brew Kit

“Small beer” – the drink for one and all!
Make your own at home the original way, ready in just 24 hours. Small beer, named for its low alcohol content, was enjoyed by colonists and militiamen as a regular beverage. Our recipe is adapted from a handwritten entry in George Washington’s French and Indian War journal “To make small beer” when the future president would have been in his mid 20’s. While beer was a Mount Vernon favorite, small beer would have been given to servants, enslaved people, or children while beer with a higher alcohol content would have been served to the Washington family and guests.
Recipe: Bring a gallon of water to a boil. Remove from heat and add hops. Allow to steep for 5 minutes, then strain out hops. While warm, stir in molasses until dissolved. Add yeast once mixture as cooled to body temperature. Let ferment in a ventilated container at room temperature. After 24 hours, strain and enjoy!
