DESCRIPTION

The classic Good & Plenty is the nation’s oldest brand, first made in 1893. Licorice root first arrived in North America in the 1600s. It was enjoyed as a spice, tea, used medicinally, and used for dental hygiene as an early toothbrush. Licorice flavors took off in the late 1800s and early 1900s – allsorts, laces, Black Jack gum, bridge mix, and more! No wonder the Good N’ Plenty has stood the test of time: it’s the perfect confection for any licorice lover.

Good & Plenty: How One Candy Became an American Icon

Good & Plenty, the nation's oldest candy brand, was first introduced in 1893 by the Quaker City Confectionary Company of Philadelphia. Known for its distinct pink and white candy-coated licorice, it gained widespread popularity thanks to its clever marketing. The candy’s success can largely be attributed to the introduction of the Choo-Choo Charlie character in the 1950s, who promoted Good & Plenty in a memorable TV ad. The catchy jingle, based on the Ballad of Casey Jones, became a hallmark of the brand and kept it in the public’s eye for decades. But the story of Good & Plenty doesn’t end there—there’s more to the candy’s marketing evolution that you might not expect...
