A truly historical drink as popular as it was controversial! This do-it-yourself kit contains common makings of grog, a popular drink in the 18th and 19th century for sailors on ships and revelers on shore. This kit contains two popular recipes and common ingredients used throughout time, such as cinnamon sticks, cut sugar, fruit sugar, spearmint tea, lemon peel tea, and lime crystals. Just add the rum and you’re good to go! One early iteration was rum and water, period. Our advice: use the recipes instead. Want to improvise? Feel free. You can dress up grog with mint leaves or serve it on the rocks.

Why did drinkers choose grog? According to an article in 1809, grog “…consisteth in a forgetfulness of the past, a beastly enjoyment of the present, and an indifference towards the future.”
So, here’s the going thought about the origin of grog: Edward Vernon, a British admiral, is thought to have created the first “grog” - rum diluted with water - to allow the naval squadron to drink rum without getting drunk. What followed were as many variations of the drink as there were ships, containing sugars, a variety of fruits, and spices to improve the flavor. The drink later became a favorite of the Continental Navy. The name “grog” came from Vernon’s nickname “Old Grog,” for the grogram cloth coat he wore. As for “Vernon”: George Washington’s brother, Lawrence, served under Admiral Vernon, and named the now famous estate in his honor. What really happened?
It’s true that grog was popular with sailors, but by the late 1700s it was also popular with pretty much anyone with enough money to buy rum but not enough money to buy expensive wine. As one newspaper explains, it was the drink of the rubble. Sailors drank grog at sea and landlubbers drank it on land, particularly in ports, but elsewhere as well. It was the official drink to forget your troubles…but also considered the drink of alcoholics.
