Historical Insights

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was written by L. Frank Baum, an American author, playwright, and visionary storyteller. It was first published in 1900, illustrated by W.W. Denslow, and quickly became one of the most beloved children’s books in American literature.
Baum—whose full name was Lyman Frank Baum—was born in Chittenango, New York, in 1856. Before writing The Wizard of Oz, he worked in a variety of fields: as an actor, playwright, newspaper editor, and even a shopkeeper. His imagination, however, was always his truest calling. Inspired by fairy tales, theater, and the dreams of a modern America entering a new century, Baum wanted to create a distinctly American fairy tale—one without the dark, moral punishments of European stories like those by the Brothers Grimm.
When The Wonderful Wizard of Oz appeared, it was an instant sensation. Its success led Baum to write 13 more Oz books, creating a vast and whimsical world filled with new lands and unforgettable characters. The story was later adapted into stage plays and, most famously, the 1939 film starring Judy Garland, which immortalized songs like “Over the Rainbow.”
Baum said he wrote his tales to “please children of today,” yet his stories have endured for generations, reminding readers that courage, heart, and wisdom often lie within us all—waiting to be discovered.
