DESCRIPTION
Wilbur Buds are sumptuous little treats, shaped a bit like non-nonpareils without the speckles and with a delight flourish on top. The name “Wilbur” is embedded on the bottom of the unwrapped treats. Most everyone agrees that the texture of Wilbur Buds is creamy and rich enough to make your eyes close when you first bite into one. The flavor is chocolate – make that more chocolate and less wax! – a real thumbs up where commercial chocolate is concerned. The pieces are small enough to lift with two fingers and be done with it – no wrappers, no pieces for later. But as the legendary potato chip ad would put it – no one can eat just one. Comes with the story on the label.

In 1865, Henry Oscar Wilbur operated a hardware and stove business in New Jersey. He soon decided to switch careers and open a confectionary business in Philadelphia. The new career endured for generations. One of their creations was what Wilbur and his sons called the “Wilbur Bud” a chocolate that resembled a nonpareil with a swirl on top. The candy was a “kiss candies” a generic name of candies that were small enough to pop in your mouth like a sweet kiss. Then, in 1905, one of H.O. Wilbur’s grandsons invented a machine to foil the candy in a silver sleeve. As it happened, Milton Hershey was their neighbor. AND as it happened, in 1907, Hershey “invented” the silver foil wrapped “Hershey Kiss”. Coincidence? Now I ask you. Get the full story here from Susan’s book “Sweet as Sin.”
