What is the story of Turkish delight?

Turkish Delight was a medicine first, then a candy! It was originally sold in 9th century Arabic apothecaries as a treatment for sore throat. In the 1700s, a Turkish sultan loved it, and word spread about how tasty it was. A version of Turkish delight was even enjoyed in the U.S. Colonies.

In the 1860s, a Bostonian coated a candy with a hard sugar shell and sent it to Union soldiers during the Civil War. The name of that candy…the jelly bean!

Turkish delight was the first in a line-up of other so-called gum candies such as gum drops (1805), Wine Gums (1909), and gummy bears (1922). Eventually Turkish Delight appeared in the beloved Chronicles of Narnia.
