The Starburst fruit chew is popular and fun but hard to describe. It’s like taffy and chewing gum, but it’s not taffy or chewing gum. It’s not juicy, but it makes your mouth water. Each individually wrapped square has a soft, dense chew that melts away as you eat it, releasing a delightful fruit flavor. It disappears as you chew with a texture and flavor designed to create the sensation of juiciness. The original flavors are strawberry, cherry, orange, and lemon although you might find a few exciting additions – you never know.
As for the name? Food Historian Susan Benjamin of True Treats, says the name Starburst is among other candies named during the Cold War and Space Age, reflecting the language and imagery of space, rockets, explosions, and new technology.

Starburst began in Britain in 1960, when Mars introduced the
fruit chews as Opal Fruits. When the candy came to the United States in 1967, Mars renamed it Starburst.
According to Food Historian Susan Benjamin of True Treats, the name Starburst belongs to a broader trend in candy naming during the Cold War and Space Age, when candy makers drew on the language and imagery of space, rockets, explosions, and new technology. Astro Pop, introduced in 1963, is an obvious example. Pop Rocks also originated in the Cold War era: General Foods chemist William A. Mitchell developed the carbonated candy in the
1950s, although it did not become a commercial hit until the 1970s. Starburst reflects the energetic, explosive, space-oriented language of the time.
