Handmade stain glass candy. A true – and hard-to-find delight, with roots in 1700s sweets and perfectly representing a beloved treat from the civil war era candy traditions. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of stain glass is its appearance. Glittering chards of candy, that so closely resemble stain glass, the candy inherited its name. The chards are smooth and clear, crisp to bite but not so hard as to hurt your teeth, like some other hard candy often found in a civil war candy box. As for the flavor – a delightful cherry flavor, much like the old-fashioned cough drops, without being overly sweet. Also known as hard tack, this candy is so lovely it has endured for years, maintaining its place among classic 1800s candy favorites and historical candy collection. The history and a period image is on the label.

Stain Glass: The Hidden Word of the Most Gorgeous Candy
From Susan’s Book Fun Foods
Stained glass candy has many names – stain glass, broken glass, and hard tack, but all represent a shimmering beautiful candy. It was a familiar sight among civil war era candy. Unlike sugar plums, they required little in the way of process, were made at home, and were inexpensive to make. Stained glass was (and still is) popular in rural areas such as Appalachia, especially at Christmas. A favorite often found in a civil war candy box. Essentially, they poured a sugar/water mix onto a pan, adding coloring, flavoring, maybe nuts, a few petals, whatever struck their fancy. The sugar, meanwhile, could have been cane, corn syrup, sorghum molasses, and any combination of the above. They may have cooked it over a fire or in an oven; either way, when it hardened, they smacked it into pieces of glimmering, glass-like shards. It later became a classic 1800s candy. Originally, stained glass may have contained medicine, as well
