Over 100 years ago, the humble gummy candy has morphed into the Sour Patch Kids candy. The change came in the 1980s when the soft, smooth gummy candy transformed into the strange and ever transforming Sour Patch Kid. Each bite starts with a tangy sour coating then transforms into the alluringly sweet, fruity taste featuring flavors like blue raspberry, red berry, lemon, lime, and orange. The soft, chewy consistency and bold flavor combination offers more than the perfect balance of sour and sweet, but creates a candy-eating experience making them a hit at movie theaters, parties treat, and nostalgic candy lineups. And let’s not forget the dashingly bright colors making Sour Patch Kids welcome at any gathering.
A Quick Bite of Candy History
Sour Patch Kids was a native of Canada where it was invented in the 1970s and named “Mars Men.” Once the little creatures headed south, to join the legends of American retro candies, they were renamed the Sour Patch Kids for the vastly popular Cabbage Patch Kids dolls.

Historical Insights
Sour Patch Kids, now considered a top-sel;ling retro favorite, was invented by Canadian confectioner Frank Galatolie and originally marketed as “Mars Men”, taking advantage of the popularity of UFOs and space themes during the 1970s. When the candy arrived in the U.S. market, the name underwent a change becoming Sour Patch Kids. The reason was simple, although with short lived relevance. At that time, marketers wanted to connect with another major cultural craze at the time: the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls.
Over time, especially in the 1990s and 2000s, the brand evolved into the more mischievous “sour prankster” identity with slogans like: “Sour. Sweet. Gone.”
The slogan — “Sour. Sweet. Gone.” — reflected its defining feature: a tart sugar coating that quickly gave way to a sweet gummy candy center. This sour-then-sweet experience helped make Sour Patch Kids one of the most successful gummy candies ever created.
