The sour taste is delightful familiar – not glaring as with many candies these days – but delightfully tart. Each oner is lightly coated with sugar to keep it from sticking.

When Europeans first set foot in North America, they were surprised to find grapevines growing everywhere — so many, in fact, that they named the land “Vineland.” One of the most famous American grapes included Vitis labrusca, or Concord grapes, which were great at surviving cold weather and resisting disease and loved for its flavor.
Early settlers often described the aroma of native grapes as similar to an “animal den,” which led to the nickname “fox grapes.” Today, we know that this scent comes from a compound called methyl anthranilate — an earthy, musky-smelling substance found in Concord Grapes and its relatives. Interestingly, it’s also present in the musk glands of foxes and dogs! It turns out our ancestors had a sharp sense of smell.
