Sarsaparilla tastes much like root beer, with a slightly sharper, more earthy flavor and a little like licorice. It’s no wonder: sarsaparilla and root beer were among the 50 or so ingredients that went into making the Native American “root tea” later named “root beer.” To make sarsaparilla tea, simply pour a cup of boiling water over a teaspoon or two of sarsaparilla and let sit for about 30 minutes. Then strain and enjoy.
While pleasant to drink, sarsaparilla was healthful. Native to southern North and Central America, Native Americans, enslaved African Americans, and European Americans have long used sarsaparilla for its flavor and ability to cleanse the blood and cure everything from colds to skin disease. For Native Americans, it even served as an aphrodisiac.
