DESCRIPTION

A grown-up’s taste of pirate life! Pirates have long been associated with grog – basically rum possibly mixed with water. But pirates had other drinks, depending on their nation of origin and the duration of the trip. This sampler celebrates the alcohol which kept the pirates afloat – brandy, wine, rum and whisky. All are tucked in a delicious dark chocolate shell with the alcohol flavor at the center. They are packaged in individual serving sizes…so you can share, take to the office, or even enjoy on a boat. BEST OF ALL the story of each sample is on the label. Alcohol-free and worthy of a top-ranking captain!

Historical Insights

Pirates are known as a set of renegades, complete with eye-patches, hooks for arms and a vocabulary riddled with “arrggs.” Actually, though, the golden age of piracy only lasted about 25 years – but pirates took to the sea for hundreds. Government ships used piracy to outdo their enemies – stealing everything from good to munitions. Private vessels raided other boats and ships to sweeten their cargo. And privateers, among other sea-going folds, were part of the military’s arsenal, sent to break the economic backbone of their foes.

Alcohol played a role in these travels. It was a substitute for water, which grew murky and contaminated in a few days of travel. It eased ills (as well as created them) and had medicinal value as well. The alcohol depended on the nations of the pirate’s origin – the British had rum and the French had wine. During the Civil War, the Confederate navy drank whiskey. Who knew?
