Mesoamericans revered the cacao as a gift from the gods. It was was also used as currency—drinking cacao was much like drinking gold. The Colonists mixed the cacao with sugar and spices which they drank or ate for health and flavor. The cacao bean has a thin, protective shell that many eat to offset the bitter taste of the bean within while preserving the distinct flavor.
