The candy stick – aka stick candy – likely started in the 7th century when Europeans were using pulled sugars
as medicine and, eventually, a treat. In 1837 some sticks were downsized to three inches, most likely because of
machinery allowing them to do so, but some held their original candy-cane size length. The porous sticks were also used as a straw in hot, wintertime drinks.
