DESCRIPTION
Blackberry candies are made in small batches by a small family run company. The flavor is sweet and tart, reflecting the blackberry’s flavor, and each piece is bite size. Unlike corporate candies, these are individually shaped into round bite size pieces. The candy itself has the smooth finish typical of hard candies, but the outside is dusted in sugar – a process called “sanding” which keeps the candy from sticking. A unique flavor with roots in the American landscape and the Native Americans, the oldest inhabitants.

Blackberries are a significant to the makeup of the North American landscape. For many Native Americans, blackberry plants were bountiful and multipurpose: as food, tea, medicine and dye, and as a preservative in such foods as pemmican. It was also used to treat everything from digestive issues to snake bites. Blackberries were important to those who arrived throughout the centuries, as well. This is especially evident in the role of blackberries in the Civil War.
Throughout the war, soldiers on both sides raided homes, farms, and fields - any place with food. They found maple sugar and even licorice roots which they chewed to clean their teeth. They ate dandelions and drank the leaves and stems as tea. One of the most prized fruits was blackberries. They represented something special to one Union soldier who said: “You must not think that we fight because we are mad, for it is not the case, for we pick blackberries together [with Confederate soldiers] and off the same bush at the same time…” Private John F. Brobst (Wisconsin) near Atlanta Georgia, Aug.1864.
Blackberries grow readily today, spreading their roots underground and appearing wherever suits them.
