What makes Milk Duds a unique and ever-popular candy? Could be the the texture. Smooth chocolate coating – unlike the harder texture of other chocolate covered candies. Then there’s the incredibly soft caramel inside – more like a nugget than a hard caramel ball. Besides, they’re to eat, no chocolate mess, no drippy filling. No wonder its been popular from movie theaters to penny candy stores since the 1920s!

Milk Duds: The Sweet Success Born from a Candy Mishap
Milk Duds were invented by the F. Hoffman Company of Chicago in the 1920s and later made by Halloway. They company intended to call their candy “chocolate milk balls” – for their smooth round coating and caramel center neatly tucked inside. Only one problem: the weight of the chocolate caused the candy to dent and sag against the supple texture of the chocolate. What to do? How can you sell a candy that sags and is dented? It wasn’t a ball. It was a dud. And that’s when someone in the company came up with a great idea. Let’s call it “Milk Chocolate Duds”! Too long. OK, then “Milk Duds.” It’s too bad that person’s identity has been lost in the annals of history: It was the first time, and only time as far as I know, that a candy was named for its liability.
