A Taste of History

Native Americans were the first to collect and process maple sap, creating maple sugar and maple syrup well before cane sugar appeared in North America. The process of harvesting the sap was communal, involving much of the community. European settlers later adopted maple sugar because it was abundant, affordable, and delicious. During the American Revolution, Colonists embraced maple sugar as an alternative to imported British cane sugar from the Caribbean. Decades later, abolitionists, promoted maple sugar as an ethical alternative to cane sugar produced through enslaved labor.

Today, maple candy and maple-flavored sweets continue this uniquely American tradition, offering the rich, distinctive taste that has delighted generations for centuries.

Historical Insights

Maple sugar had long been boiled by Native Americans in logs, tin buckets and other containers. Some tribes even placed hot rocks in the sap to heat it. The maple drops of today came along much later, as maple sugar is difficult to heat without crystallizing or becoming sticky. Instead, the drops rely on a certain amount of other sugars – corn syrup, for example, another Native American sweetener – and cane.
