Limes originated in Southeast Asia but were brought to the “New World” by Columbus. BUT – not to North America. These lime seeds were planted Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. Starting in the 18th century, limes were used by British sailors although whether they knew it was used to treat scurvy is up for date. Regardless, the limes onboard are thought to be the reason why British sailors were thought to be called “limeys.” Limes took hold in North America, Florida to be precise, in the 1800s when lime production took off…then ended due to a devastating frost that wiped out the industry in 1894 – 1895. Today, most of the limes we enjoy are grown in Mexico and Central America.
