DESCRIPTION
These charmingly small hard candies have been enjoyed since the 1500s. They are one of the “sugarplum” family (the real one) still made in the same place and in the same style. Each one is the size of a pebble, only round and smooth, with a tiny anise seed at its center. You can choose from several natural flavors: violet, rose, orange blossom, lemon, or blackcurrant. All are light and refreshing. Originally made by French monks, they were enjoyed by well-to-do European ladies to enjoy after a meal as a digestive. But you can enjoy them anytime. Comes in a collectable tin – easy to carry, open and close.

The village Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, in Burgundy (Bourgogne), where the Flavigny is made, has a long history going back to Roman and early medieval times. It was there that a Benedictine monastery was founded there in 719 by Widerard (or Widerad). According to legend, the monks who lived there started making small sweet pastilles from anise seeds coated with sugar.
The first documented use of the candy (or a form of it) dates to 1591, when Benedictine monks of the abbey are said to have distributed these aniseed sweets to pilgrims and clerics. The tins are part of the tradition; originally they were chosen for their durability and have become an iconic part of the brand.
During the French Revolution, church properties—including the abbey—were confiscated or repurposed and the monks
forced to leave. In their place, local confectioners made these sweets, eventually consolidating their efforts into one production. The abbey enterprise was bought by Jean Troubat in 1923. His son, Nicolas Troubat, took over in 1965 and, in 1990, his granddaughter Catherine Troubat has led the company.

This hits you with a very strong floral taste at the outset, almost perfumy. It mellows after a bit, but it's still a flavor that might not appeal to some. If you like violet, then rest assured these don't skimp on taste. I absolutely love the anise ones, and the orange blossom are nice, but not really digging the violet. I do think it's neat that all of them have an anise seed in the middle.
