The Hot Tamale was known as a spirit, enjoyable Mexican/American food, so renowned everything from kid’s baseball teams to Race Horses were named for it. In 1950, the Just Born company invented their own version which is still with us today. The company was started by Sam Born, a Russian immigrant who went into candy-making in 1910 in Brooklyn New York. A few years later he opened a retail store, helping to bring French chocolates to New York. He announced the freshness of his sweets with a sign saying “Just Born.”
Born eventually moved his company to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to save money during the Depression. In 1953, the company bought Rodda Candy Co. of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, mainly for its jellybean business. Rodda did have a line of marshmallow chicks which they embraced and made it today’s hit! In 1950 Sam’s son, who had joined the company after serving in World War Two, also created another candy superstar: Hot Tamales!
