DESCRIPTION
These handmade, small-batch peanut butter cups are a true example of traditional American candy making. Crafted from an original recipe dating back to the early 1900s—and still made by the same family—this classic chocolate peanut butter candy delivers rich flavor and authentic craftsmanship in every bite.
From the moment the chocolate is melted to the final stages of cooling, each cup is made with smooth, pure milk chocolate—none of the waxy texture found in mass-produced sweets. The center features hand-stirred peanut butter, creating a creamy, sink-your-teeth-in texture that perfectly balances the delicate chocolate shell.
Part of our chocolate collection, these peanut butter cups highlight the enduring appeal of simple, well-crafted confections. Each set includes a keepsake tag featuring the story of the candy along with a period image.
Selected by candy historian Susan Benjamin, founder of True Treats—featured on The Food That Built America—these peanut butter cups represent the rich tradition of small-batch candy making.

The story goes that in 1928 Harry Reese invented the peanut butter cup. Actually, peanut butter filled chocolates were widely enjoyed for well over a decade before then. And why not? Peanut butter was the ideal companion to chocolate – it was salty, balancing the sweetness of the chocolate. Its creamy texture balanced the rigidity of the chocolate. And, above all, it was relatively inexpensive. In fact, in the 1920s, an array of chocolates were sold for two reasons. One is obvious. They were delicious, affordable, and small enough to accommodate every venue whether streetside vendors, pharmacies, or upscale department stores. The other was Prohibition. With alcohol being illegal, restaurant owners needed to mitigate their losses in sales of after dinner (not to mention before and during dinner) drinks. So, they sold chocolates. Fat cats in big companies may have slipped an illegal pint of whiskey in their desk drawers for a nip or two or three during the day. But they offered boxed chocolates to business associates at meetings. The chocolate world was spinning and glorious. And peanut butter-filled chocolates had a place in the center.
