When you drink elderflower tea, you experience an esteemed ancient flavor enjoyed equally in ancient apothecaries, Native American tea blends, and in children’s folklore. Elderflower tea has a delicate fruity flavor, accentuated by a floral scent. Lovers of tea have referred to the elderflower tea as being “refreshing and soothing” with a slight spicy and savory accent that gives it dimension.
One traditional method of preparing the Elderflower Tea was to pour boiling water over one heaped teaspoon of dried elderflowers (or one True Treats teabag) in a cup. Cover the cup with a saucer and allow it to steep for 5 to 10 minutes before enjoying.
A bit of history: The elder tree was cultivated in Europe before 3000 BC. Remnants of the elder tree have appeared in Stone Age sites. Hippocrates and Dioscorides espoused its medicinal uses, and the Druids used the flowers – and every other part of the elder tree - in healing and blessing rituals. In North America, Native Americans have used the elderflower for healing purposes. Like practitioners everywhere, they use the tea to relieve coughs, fevers, and colds, and clear the respiratory system.
The elder tree starred in folklore through the ages, including this lovely tale by Hans Christian Andersen (1845) called “The Little Elder-Tree Mother.” Why not enjoy the tale as you sip elderflower tea or read it aloud to a young one…or anyone else. Find the tale on our blog.

Ideas and Inspiration
Why not enjoy reading Hans Christian Andersen’s tale “The Little Elder-Tree Mother” with a cup of elderflower tea. Even better, why not share a cup of elderflower tea with a young one…or anyone else… and read the story aloud. In this classic tale, a young Danish boy catches a cold, and after drinking two cups of the healing elderflower tea, dreams of “sailing into the warmer countries” where the Elder-Tree Mother appears, leading him on a dreamlike journey.
