Eating coffee beans? Really? Actually, yes. Coffee beans have been eaten for time immemorial, by sheep herders in Northern Africa, explorers to the North and South Poles, and soldiers in the Civil and Revolutionary War…to name but a few. Roasted coffee beans have a rich flavor, more present than coffee in a cup, with a marvelous snap when you bite it. These coffee beans are 100% the real thing. They’re roasted in small batches in a small, family-owned coffee company. The beans are Ethiopian, renowned as the highest-grade coffee beans, which many believe were the first beans eaten or drank in history. As for the coffee roasting machine: that was used in Paris to make coffee for the U.S. Troops during WW2. The government threw most of the machines overboard as cargo was difficult to transport during peacetime. We’re lucky to have it!

Before the Brew: The Legendary Beginnings of Coffee
The origin of coffee may have started in Ethiopia, where a goat herder noticed his goats grew energetic after eating berries from a tree. He tried the berries. Tasty. Yes. And energizing. In another version, a Yemenite Sufi mystic encountered birds eating berries with great enthusiasm and delight. He tried the berries. Same result. Whatever the origin, coffee appeared throughout the world, most certainly in North America.
