These delightful candies are, indeed, unique. The outer shell is crisp, with a creamy sugar filling, and a crunchy filbert inside. They look like little snowballs, equally at home in a decorative bowl or straight from the bag. They’re the perfect accompaniment for a cup of tea or coffee but great as an anytime snack.
I discovered cream filberts when I was researching candies of the 18th and 19th centuries. There they were in a volume from the early 1800s professing to be the only world’s only food encyclopedia. The book described cream filberts as “old-fashioned” candy, with ingredients identical to the ones used today!
Cream filberts go by other names such as “sugar plums” a style of candy dating back to the 1500s, and “mothball candy” the name it was given in the 1940s because they look like the mothballs people once used to protect their clothing from moths.
Cream filberts have been going in and out of style for centuries. Lucky fo us, we still have them today!
*Comes in a 4 oz, heat sealed bag*

Cream Filberts: A Forgotten Classic with a Sweet History
Cream Filberts are a rare, nostalgic treat with a unique history dating back to the 1600s. These candies feature a filbert nut surrounded by creamy sugar and a crisp sugar shell, creating a delightful texture with each bite. Once a popular sweet, they later became known as "mothball candy" due to their resemblance to mothballs, though their flavor is far more delicious. Inspired by sugar plums, these candies are part of a long tradition of sugar-coated nuts that have evolved over centuries. While their popularity waned, cream filberts remain a cherished old-fashioned candy, made in small batches and enjoyed by those who remember their history. But what makes them so special that they've lasted for centuries? The answer may surprise you...
