DESCRIPTION

Chunky Bars live up to their name. Unlike other candy bars, which are longer rather than higher, Chunky bars aspire to be a block, creating a thicker bite and longer chewing experience. The signature ingredient in Chunkys are roasted peanuts, which give the bar the much-loved crunch, contrasted by the smooth, rich texture of raisins, all housed in a thicker, bigger shell of chocolate than other candy bars, making them…CHUNKY.

Historical Insights

Chunky bars were made in the 1930s. At that time, a variety of candy bars had exploded onto the market, the first around 1912. What really gave candy bars their notoriety, however, was World War I when candy bars appeared in the first, standardized rations, most notably Goldenberg’s peanut Chews. The bars were experimental – would the soldiers like them? The answer was they did. In fact, they loved them and word spread until there were up to 100,000 candy bars across the USA. Seem impossible? Actually,  most of these candy wonders were made in small, regional confectioneries, now long forgotten.

The Chunky bar was made in the 1930s. Unlike most candy bars, which were flat, creator New York confectioner Philip Silvershein, wanted his candy bar to stand out. They were big and loaded with nuts, which, over the years included filberts, cashews, or peanuts. The success of the Chunky Candy bars was, undoubtedly, its heft…plus its advertising. In the 1940s, the Great Depression wanning at last, advertisers called the candy, very simply, “the Big Square Bar,” reflecting bounty. By the 1970s, they promoted the bar as “Chunky — What a Chunk o’ Chocolate.” Today, we shelve them under the nebulous header of “retro.”
