DESCRIPTION

There’s nothing quite like eating a chocolate covered espresso bean. Starts with the chocolate shell, smooth and creamy, with a rich chocolate flavor…the most popular flavor of any candy in the U.S.  Then, inside is the espresso bean which contrasts nicely against the chocolate. It’s crunchy, with a deep coffee flavor, rich and somewhat sharp – not overwhelming but blending nicely with the chocolate. Both the chocolate and the coffee are delicious pick-me-ups, perfect complements to fruit salad, baked sweets, and yes – even a cup of coffee. Best of all chocolate covered espresso is a great pick-me-up and snack whenever you want it.

Historical Insights

The origin of coffee may have started in Ethiopia, where a goat herder noticed his goats grew energetic after eating beans from a tree. He tried the berries. Tasty. Yes. And energizing. In another version, a Yemenite Sufi mystic encountered birds eating berries with great enthusiasm and delight. He tried the berries. Same result. Whatever the origin, coffee appeared throughout the world, including North America, where Colonists used it as a substitute for British tea and, flash forward a few centuries, and coffee breaks were a mainstay of the working world. Explorers to the North and South Poles had a supply of coffee and Revolutionary War and Civil War soldiers crushed and boiled coffee from their rations. More to the point, soldiers, explorers and people-on-the-go ate coffee beans, often because they didn’t have the bandwidth or desire to prepare a cup. Besides, eating chocolate made for a delicious topping on finely crafted baked goods and when engulfed in chocolate.

Revolutionary Chocolate: A History of Health and Indulgence

Chocolate has a rich history, starting in Mesoamerica where cacao beans were first discovered. The beans were consumed in a variety of ways, often in drinks and with flavorings like chili and vanilla, believed to be health-boosting. As chocolate made its way to Europe, it became a highly sought-after treat, despite some seeing it as sinful. By the 1700s, chocolate was making its way into the hearts of European settlers, including in America, where it was used for medicinal purposes. Chocolate was even seen as a gift or aphrodisiac, and some early enthusiasts, like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, believed in its health benefits. Over time, chocolate evolved from a bitter drink to the sweet, creamy treat we know today, with innovations like chocolate bars, truffles, and even confections like espresso beans coated in rich dark chocolate. The journey of chocolate continued to grow through the Industrial Revolution, leading to the creation of beloved modern candies.
