Historical Insights
Historical Insights
Hard candy, aka boiled sugars, has been around for centuries. By the late 1800s, hard candies were enjoyed as a treat and a medicine, sometimes both at one time. Originally hard candy was sold in bags and boxes of unwrapped pieces. As packaging became more sophisticated, the pieces were wrapped and ready to be purchased for candy bowls, office drawers, and grandmothers’ purses. Today the variety is amazing, bringing cough drops/throat lozenges such as Smith Brothers Cough Drops, hard candy balls and drops, sour balls and butterscotch, are favorites and recreational hard candy such as lollipops and Jolly Ranchers. Most have been around for over 100 years, some still function as medicine, others not so much.
