DESCRIPTION

These amazing caramels are made in small batches, by a small, dedicated company in the U.S. Each piece is slow-cooked in large copper kettles, so they are sure to be consistently buttery and delicious. Each one is individually wrapped, in the traditional stick shape. Pick from early selections such as old time vanilla or newer arrivals such as butter rum and sea salt.

Historical Insights

Caramels became popular in the decades following the Civil War as ingredients, and machinery, became ever more readily available. While a broad range of commercial caramels entered the candy scene, most caramels were made by women at home. The recipes were typically passed down by word-of-mouth through the generations, but also through popular cookbooks and women’s magazines. Early on, cookbooks were extremely general, requiring a teacup of this and a sprinkling of that. When Caramels came around, women’s cookbooks had become specific, recommending precise amounts of whatever the home cook was using, specific cooking times, and even the cost of the ingredients. The ingredients in caramels were simple, affordable and widely available—sugar, milk or cream, and butter.
