Candy Buttons are sweet, crunchy little dots of sugar with light fruit flavors, traditionally cherry, lemon, and lime. But eating them is the best part: kids peel the tiny buttons from their long strips of paper, with bits of paper almost always sticking to the bottoms. Some try to pick the paper off—but most just eat the candy, paper and all! Brightly colored, inexpensive, and a little messy. A favorite at penny candy stores and the sillier side of retro candy. Candy Buttons – AKA Candy Dots- were originally made in the 1930s at Cumberland Valley Company, New York. These tiny dots of flavored sugar were machine-deposited in colorful rows directly onto strips of paper. Originally produced by Cumberland Valley, with J. Sudak & Son of Brooklyn also associated with their early manufacture, Candy Buttons became a classic American penny candy. NECCO acquired Cumberland Valley in 1980 and produced the candy until its 2018 closure. Today, Candy Buttons are made by Doscher's Candies.
