Historical Insights

Candy-makers had been coming up with wild and fancy-free versions of bubblegum since the late 1800s. But the results were disappointing. Tasteless. Texture that dissolved. Bubbles that adhered to the skin. Then, a young accountant at the Fleer Gum Company came up with an altogether new iteration of bubblegum: Dubble Bubble. Soft texture, with a sweet dependable flavor, and the bubbles! Big, light, and easy to peel from the face....and - a deliberately misspelled name!

Who was the accountant?Ā  Walter Diemer a 23-year-old accountant at the Fleer Gum Company. figured it out after sneaking in the company lab after work and testing recipes after work for three years!

What became of Diemer? Diemer became a VP at the company. His days as a bubblegum guy had ended…Except when he hit the road, teaching grocers everywhere how they and their Dubble Bubble-loving customers, could blow bubbles.

Why was bubblegum pink? It was the only food coloring Diemer could find in the lab. The color stuck. The bubblegum – when it came to the skin, anyway, didn’t.
