Altoids Peppermint

Altoids have been around since the late 1700s and, to this day, live up to the company’s claim of being “The Original Celebrated Curiously Strong Mints”. These mints are small – much in the style of early apothecaries - with a strong peppermint flavor. Comes in a sturdy tin, with an attractive old-time feel that became part of Altoids’ brand in the 1920s. Definitely for the peppermint-lover. And while no longer considered a medicine as most candy was early on, their flavor will definitely open your eyes…and maybe your sinuses.

A Quick Bite of Candy History

To understand Altoids, it's worth looking at Flavignys, as well.  Both were made about 100 years apart…not especially long for the pre-industrial time period. Altoids were made by a British company in the late 1700s and Flavignys by Benedictine Monks in 1591. Both were used medicinally, typically for coughs and stomach distress…as well as refreshment. Best of all, both were enjoyed by a range of people, not just the wealthy few. Altoids were sold in apothecaries, available to the public, while Benedictine Monks passed Flavignys on to royalty as well as impoverished pilgrims. As for the tin? Tins have been around in various iterations since the early 1700s. The festive Altoids and Flavigny tins in particular? They are a 20th century creation. Great marketing, you must admit.
