 The characters in Lewis Carroll’s Mad Tea Party enjoyed tea and toast with butter. While teas consisted of light fare, guests may have also enjoyed:

• Treacle. Alice mentioned but did not eat treacle, a sweet much like American molasses, which is made into taffy aka “pulls.”
• Tea. While many guests drank black tea, others enjoyed relaxing teas such as chamomile.
• Honey. Typically in cubes, used to sweeten the tea, at your discretion.
• Lemonade. This refreshing drink was enjoyed in addition to tea – or even instead of tea.
• Bon-Bons. These candies may have been chocolate, peppermints, or even chews. Always special!
• Mixed nuts. Lightly salted, any variety would do.
• Baked goods. Cookies, cakes, biscuits: The possibilities are practically limitless.

To be truly loyal to the original: dispense with adherence to all things polite, and be perfectly frank and rude, if you feel like it. Then, afterward, say you’re sorry.
