For years, kids had to plunge their hands into a box of Lucky Charms to retrieve those tasty marshmallow-ish bits, officially called marbits. But with sugar charms they can now open a bag and enjoy the tasty little bits in bright colors…Not exactly the kind in the cereal box…but close enough. The taste isn’t exactly a marshmallow either, but it does melt in your mouth!

In the early 1960s, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, home to the Mall of America, Mary Tyler Moore, Jesse Ventura, and the Artist Formerly Known as Prince, came a star of its own, Lucky the Leprechaun. Lucky’s very existence rested on the controversial circus peanut and an event that occurred yes, right there, not only in Minnesota but at the General Mills’ campus, on the street named for another made-up mascot, Betty Crocker Drive. It was there that General Mills’ managers instructed their product developers to come up with a new cereal using either the company-made Wheaties or Cheerios. The cereal had to be unique, marketable, and kids had to love them.
Hard at work, product developer John Holahan got an idea. He took some of his favorite candies, Brach’s circus peanuts, chopped them into pieces and put them into a bowl of Cheerios. Eureka. They were amazing. Or anyway, kids would think they were amazing. Whatever they were, they were, the company gave them shapes, colors, and an abbreviated name, going from “marshmallow bits” to “marbits,” which may sound scientific but are really just marshmallows – a bit hard, a bit gritty on the teeth.
So how did the scientific-ish marbits transform into “Charms”? Evidently, one of General Mills advertising consultants mentioned something about charm bracelets, possibly in passing. “Why not call them charms?” the GM execs asked. Marshmallow charms that were “magically delicious?” or something to that effect. The charms were also magically morphing into newer and newer iterations such as Blue Diamonds, Swirled Whales, and tiny little Eiffel Towers.
The changes brought an uptick in sales, regardless of how removed they were from Lucky the Leprechaun, who was more Irish than French and more old-timey than swirled.
