These pure maple sugar crystals are a North American original – among the earliest sugars will available today. The flavor is richer than most other sugars, adding dimensions to anything from hot oatmeal to coffee or tea. The grains are slightly larger than other sugars, giving them more texture. For this, and many other reasons, they’re good for baking and do well atop cookies, muffins and pretty much anything else.

Historical Insights

Maple sugar has an impressive history. It was used by Native Americans in various iterations for untold centuries. Maple sugar was adopted by European arrivals as it was available to tap from the trees, relatively inexpensive, and, of course, tasty. Maple sugar was also used by the revolutionary colonists as a way to boycott British cane sugar, made in the Caribbean, and avoid supporting an economy based on slave labor. Later, abolitionists used maple for the same reason.
