Nik-L-Nips are among the many creations of the early 1900s using food grade petroleum to make a delightful – if not creative – treat. Shaped like little bottles, they have a sweet and flavorful drink inside, all brightly colored to make them ever-more appealing. Just “nip” of the top and suck out the drink inside. The quantity is just right – especially for kids. Enough to enjoy but not so much that it spills all over the place. As for the wax? That can be chewed like gum. The texture is firm but pliable, and, as it happens, was typical of chewing gum when first created! Best of all – this gum doesn’t stick.

Historical Insights
Nik-L-Nip, the little wax bottles with colored sugar water inside, has a questionable heritage. Rumors circulate about the name: people agree that the “Nik” stood for “nickel” the cost of the tasteless industrial wonders. Some say “Nip” refers to the process of “nipping” off the top. Others believe that “Nip” refers to a nip of whisky, which is likely seeing that the Temperance movement was in full swing, complaining about candy cigarettes and whisky gum drops. Regardless, they and their sister candy, Wax Lips (among others) evolved from the turn-of-century petroleum industry. No worries – they’re food grade!
