Malted milk balls have a unique place in candy history…and every bite tells you why. These malted milk balls have a smooth, delightfully smooth milk shell and a crispy malted milk center, (which never contained cow’s milk). The texture, and sweet chocolate flavor complimented by the crunchy interior, has made malted milk balls a favorite for over 100 years. Who knew – the malted milk at the heart of this popular candy was once considered a super food – sent to soldiers in world war candy rations and eaten by explorers to the outer reaches of the earth! This classic treat is also part of our 1900s candy gift collection and celebrated in the candy timeline box, offering a true taste of candy history. Find the story of malted milk and a historic image on every bag!

In 1873, malted milk was invented as a strength-building food for “infants and invalids” by a British pharmacist living in Wisconsin. While mothers never trusted malted milk for their kids, explorers used it on treks to such places as the North and South Pole. World War II soldiers were given a stash of malted milk tablets in their world war candy rations. In the 1930s and 40’s, chocolate-covered malted milk balls became a hit, but then, as now, Americans continued to drink the “healthy” malted milk. As for the candy: malted milk now appears in bridge mix – an array of chocolate-covered fruits and nuts; at movie theaters where they are featured at concession stands; and at old-fashioned candy stores in various sizes and shapes. This beloved treat is part of our 1900s candy gift collection and the candy timeline box, celebrating its enduring place in candy history.
