Sometimes called pulls, this rich confection got its start in the mid-1800s as an early penny candy. The sugar is pulled, cut it in pieces, then let it sit until it becomes creamy and flaky. They’re typical of the rich style of sweets enjoyed in the 1800s, like the caramel marshmallow Modjeska, first made in Kentucky.
