DESCRIPTION
Jolly Ranchers are a fun lovin’ candy, the pieces somewhat misshapen and somewhat sticky, but who cares? No attempts of neatness or propriety here – these are real Rancher style treats originally made in the 1940s in Colorado. Of course, the flavors are ever changin’ in the modern world, now coming in bright and tasty Cherry, Blue Raspberry, Grape, Green Apple and Watermelon. Enough to make your mouth water…so keep some handy at all times. But not in the sun.

Jolly Ranchers were invented in 1949 by Bill and Dorothy Harmsen in Golden, Colorado. They started originally opened the Jolly Rancher Company as an ice cream and candy store. But when they said “Jolly Rancher” they weren’t kidding. They were in Colorads, after all, and advertised their ice cream and candy store which featured Peacan Cowboys (chocolate), Ranch Kittchen fudge, and very rancher-ish ice creams such as Rancho Cream Cones and Rancho Orchard Punch. Their ads were loaded with bronco boys and lassos. Should you hesitate to buy, they announce that each candy is hand cut the old-fashioned way and that their Jolly Rancher Candy is: “The only candy positively guaranteed to be superior to any other candy you have eaten.” They gave away saddles in local community contests and sponsored events where you can meet the Candy Cowgirl, decked in a checkered cowgirl shirt and cowgirl hat.
As for the flavors: these were fruit flavored with apple, grape, lemon and cherry and, albeit a outlier, cinnamon. The flavors and varieties grew as Jolly Rancher left cowboy country to enter the corporate world, first with Beatrice Foods and eventually Hershey who owns the company today.
