DESCRIPTION

This peppermint and molasses candy is classic 19th century where it was a favorite of kids. The flavor is sweet and rich with a bit of zing from the peppermint. Each piece is in classic “cough drop” style – oval and smooth, easy to eat, and perfect when you want a bit of something sweet. This version was made in the 1930s, so-named because the confectioner gave broken pieces to children heading to school—where candy was forbidden.

Historical Insights

Hard candies were made in the mid-1800s, spun off from the typically medicinal “boiled sugars”. The boiled sugars became known as “cough drops” in the mid-1800s. Increasingly, they were sold as candy, some maintaining their medicinal value, such as peppermint drops and horehound candies. Others, such as peppermint-molasses candies were all about fun.
