Make your own small beer at home the original way, ready in just 24 hours. Sweet and hoppy. While beer was a Mount Vernon favorite, along with stain glass candy and cacao shell tea, small beer would have been enjoyed by servants, enslaved people, or children. Drinks with a higher alcohol content would have been served to the Washington family and guests.

What is Small Beer?

Small beer, named for its low alcohol content, was enjoyed by colonists and militiamen as a regular beverage. Our recipe is adapted from a handwritten entry in George Washington’s French and Indian War journal “To make small beer” when the future president would have been in his mid 20’s.
