To fight colds in the 1700s, Colonists turned to a mixture of horehound, honey, and thyme brewed together in a cough and cold remedy tea. The flavor brings together three common medicinals: Horehound, a bitter, earthy, and slightly minty flavor, some say is related to root beer and licorice; Honey is sweet, of course; and Thyme which has a warm, slightly peppery, taste.
To prepare this unusual tea, add two teaspoons Colonial Cough & Cold Remedy Tea to a cup of hot water. Allow to steep for 3 minutes or longer, depending on your taste. When the tea is ready, add lemon, extra honey or amber beet sugar, or a dash of milk or cream.
True Treats’ Colonial Cough & Cold Remedy also makes an excellent toddy. The earliest record of a medicinal toddy, “a beverage made of alcoholic liquor with hot water, sugar, and spices” is from 1786, although Robert Bentley Todd is credited with popularizing prescribing the hot toddy in the 1800s. You’ll find a recipe that marries these two remedy drinks in our “Ideas and Inspirations” dropdown.

The Horehound Hot Toddy is a historical drink that showcases how early American colonists coped with ailments like coughs and colds. This warm beverage combines horehound, a traditional herb known for its medicinal properties, with honey and fresh thyme. The result is a soothing concoction that not only offers comfort but also epitomizes the resourcefulness of colonists in utilizing available natural ingredients for health benefits.
The recipe for this hot toddy varies slightly among sources, but the fundamental elements remain the same. Typically, two teaspoons of Colonial Cough & Cold Remedy Tea are mixed with whiskey, honey, and a hint of lemon juice, making it a delightful treat for anyone looking to fend off the chills. It’s important to remember that while enjoyable, the hot toddy also serves to highlight the blending of culinary practices and health remedies during colonial times.
