Historical Insights
Chuckles were made in 1921, meant to solve the problem of jelly candies “sweating” and sticking together. The solution was to create a sizable sugar overlay that protected the candy from harm. Other confectioners solved the problem is similar ways. The ancient Turkish delight is dusted with cream of tartar, for example. Even hard candies needed protection and they got it through a process known as sanding, where confectioners coated the hard candies in a layer of sugar as thin as sand. Chuckles have been enjoyed by adults and children, World War II soldiers and, people at home. As for the name – it was meant to reflect the joy people felt when eating one of these classic candies.
