The Sweet History of Bridge Mix: Chocolate-Covered Delights
Chocolate Covered Raisins starred in Bridge Mix - an assortment of chocolate-covered raisins, almonds, peanuts, and caramels - a marvel of candy-making and a favorite in polite society. From the 1920s to the 1950s, couples sat at designated “bridge tables” for hours, cards in their hands. But how to snack? How to enjoy some sweet refreshment? That would mean putting down the cards and stopping the game. Enter the bridge mix, served or stationed in candy bowls alongside bridge tables everywhere. The bridge player had only to dip the fingers of one hand into the bowl to retrieve the delicious sustenance without ever lowering the cards. Other classics, such as licorice bridge mix or tastefully sugared mixes featuring the Jordon Almond were also present, depending on the players involved and, I bet, the décor of the house that was hosting the game. Like many classic treats, chocolate-covered raisins were part of world war candy rations, offering soldiers a sweet, energizing snack. These nostalgic candies are featured in our 1900s candy gift collection and the candy timeline box, highlighting their historical significance.
