The “Caramel Biscuit” – A True American Original!

The perfect union of two American classics: fresh creamy marshmallow enrobed with a caramel coating. Specially made so you can sink your teeth into the warm sweetness, delicious and unforgettable. And why wouldn’t they be? Originally called a “caramel biscuit” this particular version was made in 1883 in Kentucky and called Modjeska.

So, how’d it get the name? In the 1800s, renowned Polish actress Madame Helena Modjeska thrilled Kentucky audiences with her performance in the debut of Ibsen’s play, “The Doll’s House.” So impressed was a confectioner in the audience, he named his caramel biscuit the “Modjeska” in her honor. These are the caramels he made.

4 oz in a heat-sealed bag with the history on the label.

“The marshmallow tempers the stickiness of the caramel, and the combo is delicious!” -Lucile

Modjeska's

When I was growing up my dad, mom and I would go to the HUGE Woolworth's store in downtown Denver. It filled up a whole city walk, side to side and front to back and it was two floors. Their candy counter which was really a candy department, had these treasures. The were called carmellows. The candy ladies wore white dresses and aprons and they actually waited on you. The had every candy you could ever want and also mixed fancy nuts (no peanuts) that were on a tray that revolved. It also kept the nuts warm. The warm nuts were a perfect accompaniment to the caramellows. Later I found modjeska's which are the same thing. They taste the same and are wrapped the same! It brought me back to the little girl and her parents at the candy counter. Thanks for keeping this tasty candy going 💝.
