These enchanting candies have been around since at least 1893, possibly early. Buttermint makers describe their candy as “Unexpectedly Scrumptious.” But one newspaper piece described it even better in 1949 “These wonderful butter mints just melt in your mouth….They’re so creamy, so smooth, so pure and delicious. Buy some now for your family, for home entertaining…everyone will like them.” And indeed, they do. That’s one reason why butter mints were among the top candies restaurants offered customers after a meal. Comes with the buttermint story and an historical image on the label!
Each 4 oz heat-sealed bag contains these decadent, old-fashioned mints, complete with a touch of history on the label. Perfect for after-dinner refreshment, wedding favors, gift baskets, and everyday snacking, these mints are a must-have for any candy lover

A natural question about buttermint is “Who invented buttermints?” The answer comes down to this: no one. No one invented them. They just emerged out of a history of delightfully soft, creamy sweets such as the pulled cream from the mid-1800s sold as a penny canny. And the melt-away mints whose name says it all. Better to ask who branded them? Or, even better, marketed them so we still enjoy them today.
The likeliest contender is Richardson’s who started making butter mints in 1893. They may have made them, but didn’t advertise a lot: that didn’t happen until the 1920s when other companies were advertising them, as well. And the reason? Buttermints were perfect for tea parties, bridge games, and other events where women gathered for (an often very) light lunch. Food was not the point, but conversation was. So why stuff your face with a piece of cake when you can delicately enjoy a mint between snippets of conversation.
Later, after Prohibition ended, cocktail parties returned to offer an altogether different social experience. By buttermints, with their light buttery flavor and texture remined. So smooth, so – yes! – buttery, without that problematic tendency to melt.

Buttermints, while primarily a delightful treat, can offer some unexpected health benefits when enjoyed in moderation. The primary ingredient, peppermint, is known for its digestive properties and can help soothe the stomach by alleviating discomfort and reducing bloating. Additionally, peppermint has been shown to provide mental clarity and focus, making Buttermints not just a sweet indulgence but a potential booster for concentration.
Moreover, the sweet flavor of Buttermints can satisfy sugar cravings without leading to excessive consumption of high-calorie desserts. When compared to other candies, Buttermints have a lighter profile, which can make them a more appealing option for those watching their calorie intake. Their refreshing taste can also serve as a palate cleanser, making them an excellent choice after meals or during social gatherings.
Recipes Featuring Buttermints
Buttermints can serve as a versatile ingredient in various recipes, enhancing both the flavor and presentation of sweet dishes. One popular method is incorporating crushed Buttermints into buttercream frosting for cakes or cupcakes, adding a unique peppermint flavor that pairs beautifully with chocolate or vanilla. This not only elevates the dessert but also gives a delightful crunch to the silky frosting.
Another creative way to use Buttermints is by incorporating them into a festive dessert platter during the holiday season. They can be used to garnish chocolate mousse or to top off peppermint bark, adding a splash of color and flavor. Sprinkling crushed Buttermints over vanilla ice cream offers a simple yet elegant treat that instantly elevates a classic dessert into something special.
