1700s Sweets: A Historical Candy Collection and Gift
Candy didn’t appear in the 1700s – but it evolved. Rich with flavors, textures, and uses, they have been part of the American landscape before there was an America! Native Americans had long been using sugars from fruits, berries, and saps, boiling some, such as maple and hickory barks, into syrups. New plants arrived fueled by the many explorers and traders carrying sorghum grain, licorice root, bees to make honey, and many more. These early ingredients laid the foundation for 1700s sweets that would eventually shape America’s candy traditions.
The candy of the time, such as boiled sugars, also served as medicine, while chocolate was processed in North America, but remained a drink. Make no mistake: the ports and kitchens of the new nation were rich with sophisticated and delightful sweets, from candied petals to cinnamon-covered nuts. Many of these confections, now celebrated as part of our historical candy collection, tell a story far beyond simple indulgence.
Many were delivered on the cargo of ships, distributed through sanctioned acts of slavery, while others arrived via the sophisticated trade routes of Native Americans. Whether by land or sea, the sweets of early America were complex and remarkable. Today, they make for a truly meaningful historical candy gift, connecting modern lovers of sweets to a rich and complicated past.

I bought one to assess as an educational tool for my third graders but it's useless when the box contents are not listed in order. Some are obvious, some I could guess, but too many I don't know. Then what's the point of the exercise? It should be packaged in order of the contents as listed on the packaging. I was interested in trying different eras but I assume it's all like this. I would rate 1 star for disservice but the quality of the candies is good.
