Moon Pie

Delicious Since 1917 – The Moon Pie

Dating back to 1917, it was a food especially created when a Kentucky coal miner asked a traveling salesman named Earl Mitchell, for a snack “as big as the moon.” Soon after, the gentleman brought back the Moon Pie and hardworking coal miners loved it because it was delicious, filling, and it fit perfectly in their lunch pails.

Mint Juleps

From Kentucky, a mingling of whiskey and mint flavors enrobed with rich, dark chocolate that recall the “mint julep” drink and others of its type: bourbon balls, rum cordials, bourbon caramels, Irish Cream cordials and many more. During Prohibition, restaurant owners compensated for revenues they lost because of the ban on alcohol by selling after-dinner candy. Many were flavored like alcohol or named for a specific drink. Regardless, the candy/alcohol link has been unbroken for decades. Contains six candies in an elegant truffle box with the story on a keepsake tag. Sending a gift? Let us know, and we’ll send a gift card from you. Want to send six candies of any type? We’ll send it in a gold box with a ribbon and card, no charge.

Chocolate Covered Pretzels with Sprinkles

The story of the pretzel is all about love… who knew? First made in the 600s by Italian monks possibly as a food for Lent, pretzels soon came to signify two arms crossed in the bonds of matrimony – hence, some believe, the phrase “tying the knot.” Our chocolate covered pretzels are the perfect marriage of the 7th century pretzel enrobed in 19th century chocolate then lovingly covered in fun, colorful sprinkles.  3 pc – Comes with a label with an historic image on the front and the story on the back!

Chocolate Covered Retro Twinkies

Twinkies… Everyone’s Favorite Snack!

The infamous snack treat was likely invented in NYC in 1849 but took off in 1930 in Illinois, with banana cream filling. And the name? It was inspired by a billboard advertisement for “Twinkle Toe Shoes” the sweet’s creator saw in St. Louis. The Twinkie’s roots go back to the 1700s sponge cake. The vanilla cream appeared during WWII as bananas were rationed.

Do Twinkies Really Last Forever?!

Despite the persistent rumors about Twinkies remaining fresh for decades, they actually had a very short shelf life! Originally only good for about a week, after disappearing briefly from the market they made a return with an extended shelf life of about 45 days. Ours are dipped in handmade milk chocolate. Sold individually.

Chocolate Covered Rice Krispies

Rice Krispies would not exist were it not for the company’s mascots – Snap, Crackle and Pop! Made by illustrator Vernon Grant, starting with Snap, in 1933, and followed by Crackle and Pop, in 1939, the gnomes created a marketing wave that would not stop… Even the Rolling Stones recorded an advertisement in 1963! Anyway, in 1939 Mildred Day, a leader in the Campfire Girls and an employee in Kellogg Home Economics Department, developed the idea of creating Marshmallow Rice Krispies Squares. The concept was based on a 1916 recipe for “Puffed Rice Brittle.” During that time, Campfire girls were also selling “Campfire Marshmallows” and the fit worked.

A few years later, Kellogg’s put the recipe on the back of the cereal box, trademarked the name and it became the go-to for parties and other fun events. Jump ahead about 50 years and the treats became pre-made, sold at supermarkets and everywhere else…under the original and new names. Our marshmallow treats are hand-dipped with chocolate using a turn-of-century recipe. Delicious. Try ours this Easter…chocolate covered. How could you go wrong. Comes packaged as shown with story on the label. Includes a True Treats Easter card!
