Blueberry Sugar – Delicious Historic Blend.

Enjoy the taste of pure cane sugar and dried blueberries – nothing else but so much more! For the romantically inclined, this sugar is perfect on the rim of a Margherita or atop a luscious sweet. Yet the versatile blueberry sugar is perfect for hot cereal, toast, beverages such as smoothies.

Native Americans derived sugar from a variety of sources including blueberries. Newcomers to North America brought cane sugar with its distinctive flavor and tangled past, the far-reaching cane cut and processed by enslaved laborers from Africa. Together, the fruit sugars of the Native Americans and the European cane sugar represent the blend of traditions and cultures that forged America.

About Blueberries - Based on Susan's Writings

Blueberries—those small, deep-blue orbs—have long been more than just a delightful treat. Across centuries and cultures, they’ve carried profound meanings, admired for their power as natural aphrodisiacs.

The Symbol of Life and Love
For many Indigenous peoples in North America, where blueberries grow wild in forests, fields, and bogs, they symbolize life and sustenance. The Algonquin people tell of a "star berry," named for the five-pointed star at the blossom end, said to be a gift from the Great Spirit to prevent starvation. Over time, this symbolism expanded to represent renewal, protection, and even love—a perfect gift from the earth itself.

An Ancient Aphrodisiac?
Though modern science might downplay the mystique of "love foods," historical traditions often tie blueberries to passion and vitality. Rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and nutrients, they promote circulation and energy—two things essential to romance! During colonial times, folklore held that sharing foods like berries could create bonds, a practice possibly inspired by even older traditions passed down through Indigenous wisdom.

Healthful Benefits—Timeless and True
Native Americans used blueberries to treat everything from coughs to digestive issues. Later, early settlers learned from them, drying the berries for tea or using them in poultices. Today, we know blueberries are packed with vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants, which help fight inflammation and promote heart health—a treat with a purpose.

Where Blueberries Call Home
The blueberry thrives in North America, where it’s been part of the landscape for millennia. They grow in sandy soils, acidic wetlands, and sunny fields, their native varieties spreading from the deep South to the cool North. Wild blueberries, smaller and tangier than their cultivated cousins, still carpet the barrens of Maine and Canada, while highbush varieties—a favorite for farms—grow throughout the U.S.
