Smith Brothers® Cough Drops have a rich history that began in 1847 when James Smith, father of William and Andrew, moved from Quebec to Poughkeepsie, New York, and opened a restaurant. Somehow, James came across a recipe for "cough candy"—possibly from a traveler passing through—and decided to make it in his kitchen. Thus, the first "cough drop" was born.

By 1852, James' company began advertising widely in local Poughkeepsie papers, entering a competitive market that included Hayes' Cough Candy, known for its aggressive advertising, and Butler's Cough Syrup. By 1859, these candy companies boldly claimed their products could "cure" whooping cough, asthma, bronchitis, throat and lung diseases, and even provide relief for consumption—claims that are no longer supported by modern medicine.

Smith Brothers® Cough Drops quickly gained popularity across the country, renowned for their soothing properties and medicinal value—often deliciously exaggerated in advertisements.

Still enjoyed today, we have them at True Treats!
