Chemist William A. Mitchell was the mastermind behind quick-set Jell-O, the non-dairy whipped cream Cool Whip, and Tang, the official beverage of astronauts. In 1956, Mitchell also experimented with instant “Carbonated Candy,” using carbon dioxide. The attempt failed and he moved on.
